Gosforth Central Middle School


What is the Governing Body?

We are a group of people who volunteer together to support GCMS strategically. We act as a ‘critical friend’ supporting and challenging the school and its leaders, holding it to account, making sure it provides the best possible educational experiences to the children in its care. We have our own Code of Conduct and are bound by statutory requirements from Government.


What do we do?

We work closely with the school leadership team in these areas –

  • planning the future direction of the school;

  • monitoring and evaluating the progress of the school against these plans;

  • supporting and challenging the school team;

  • being accountable to parents and others about the school’s performance and;

  • ensuring all statutory duties are carried out

  • visit the school

  • engage in appropriate training


Who can be a governor?

GCMS has 20 places on its governing body and is composed of; parent governors, co-opted governors, local authority governors, foundation trust governors, staff governors and the head teacher. We can also appoint associate members who can attend meetings but do not have voting rights.  The GCMS governing body is made up of professionals from many different arenas; teachers, doctors, designers, diplomats, architects, accountants parents and retired members who come with an array of skills and experiences.


How are we organised?

Working as a full governing body is necessary to meet statutory requirements but we also operate a number of committees which focus on key areas. At the moment these are;


Finance and Resources Committee – ensures the school spends within budget and that this budget is used to meet the needs of the school by asking questions to ensure school is kept accountable for its expenditure eg Pupil Premium, Sports Premium and SEND allocations


Curriculum and Performance Committee – ensures that the statutory requirements for the curriculum are met for all subjects; that monitoring of achievement, not just through data, happens and every group of children in school have equal opportunity to achieve their potential


Staffing Committee – oversees the setting of targets for the head teacher and is responsible for their assessment annually. They are involved in any staffing issues that may arise for any member of staff.


Admissions Committee – they are involved in the monitoring of the waiting list for school places and of possible appeals. They also review the Admissions Policy annually before being agreed by the Full Governing Body.


Link Governors - we have a number of Link Governors who have a special interest in one area of school eg SEND or Safeguarding. Governors are linked to areas of the School Improvement Plan to continually monitor achievement Link governors meet with the school lead and report to the full governing body each term.


We also use working groups for specific, often time limited, things for example new build, website updates etc

When do we meet?

We meet 4 times a year as a full governing body.

  • Two meetings in the autumn term

  • One in the spring term

  • One in the summer term.


Committees meet at least 3 times a year before the full governing body meetings.

Working groups are set up as the need arises.
