Languages
Promoting a love of languages and a healthy attitude towards difference is an integral part of our pupils’ futures. We produce confident learners who embrace difference, are equipped with key communication skills and have an understanding of the structure of French and Spanish that prepares them for continued study of any language. Our pupils’ study of languages, opens the door to communication and they are empowered by being able to say things and sound French or Spanish.
At GCMS, we teach Spanish in Key Stage 2 and French in Key Stage 3. Our Spanish curriculum builds on prior knowledge from our feeder schools and the language skills that pupils acquire in Key Stage 2 are further developed and embedded throughout their French studies in Key Stage 3.
We carefully build on knowledge through planned development of topics across key stages. Focusing first on the theme of “ourselves” and then on “the wider world”. Key concepts such a gender, word order, grammatical structures and common vocabulary and verbs are revisited and embedded across each key stage. We use chunking to introduce information gradually and create clear links with differentiated tasks at all stages to ensure that all learners experience success, develop confidence and are empowered.
Our communicative approach produces a language rich classroom environment where pupils are immersed in French and Spanish with creative tasks that allow them to communicate for engaging and real purposes. Our pupils want to be heard and feel safe in taking risks to achieve this. We take all opportunities to promote and celebrate cultural differences and enjoy a successful penpal link in Key Stage 3. Languages are promoted across the school with additional languages on offer as an extra-curricular choice.
Our pupils leave us inspired to experience the world and the many opportunities that it offers.
