At GCMS we promote a ‘Sport for all’ philosophy where pupils are encouraged to participate in a range of physical activities with the intention that they become lifelong active individuals. The curriculum offers a variety of sporting opportunities to appeal to pupils with differing needs and interests.  These include individual activities such as athletics, squash and circuit training as well as team activities such as netball, football and volleyball. Our facilities are used to a premium due to the activities we offer allowing pupils the best sporting experience possible. Where necessary external coaches are invited into school to enhance the learning experience, alongside that which is provided by the teaching staff, and to create links to outside agencies. Throughout the curriculum lessons are pitched at an appropriate level, tailored to individuals where necessary, to create engagement and enthusiasm. 

Key underpinning foci within each sporting area are; the development of agility, balance and coordination, technique development and decision-making. Skills are taught, modelled and practised in isolation before being applied into a game situation. Activities on offer evolve across a pupils’ school career with new activities introduced as they progress through different year groups.  

Pupils are provided with pathways to sporting/health related opportunities to allow for personal development beyond curriculum time. Numerous extra-curricular activities are on offer with all pupils encouraged to attend. We are successful if pupils have pursued any of the activities that we present them with beyond the curriculum. At the end of Year 8 pupils have received a grounding in a variety of activities as well as experiencing enjoyment and success in sport and activity. The vast majority of our pupils pursue sport and activity outside of school a marker of our success.
