Science

In a world that is full of wonder, an education in Science at GCMS aims to inspire a passion for questioning everything around us, as well as provide the tools to explore, evaluate and organise possible answers in the pursuit of truth.

We strive to develop a confidence within young people to apply their scientific skills to all aspects of life, so that they are empowered to make educated decisions and navigate the world around them with maximum impact. We aim to shape tenacious and reasoned minds who understand the methodical process involved in uncovering truth and can apply that process to enrich their own experiences, as well as improve the world around them.

Our curriculum plan intends to achieve this by:

  • Fostering a love of questioning and an understanding that science is a part of everything

  • Highlighting the awe inspiring nature of the universe

  • Instilling a deep and clear understanding of the scientific process

  • Ensuring students have a secure foundation of scientific knowledge and understanding to build upon in KS4

  • Setting students up to succeed through effective planning, assessment, support and challenge

  • Removing the veil surrounding abstract concepts using modelling, practical demonstrations/activities and by relating scientific ideas to the real world

  • Empowering students with strategies to research, learn, revise and evaluate independently

  • Inspiring a love of learning through joyful and meaningful activities

  • Encouraging and facilitating respectful and reasoned discussions regarding the moral, ethical, social and cultural effects of science on the real world

  • Supporting students in connecting science learned in the classroom with the real world and careers

  • Creating a safe, reflective space to learn for staff and students, where all voices can be heard and where a growth mindset is embraced, in order to continually improve experiences and outcomes
