From the opening chapter...

Green-grey waves make a wall around us. We rise to the top of another but there is nothing to see except spray blowing like rain in the icy wind. Europe is sprawled somewhere in front of us but I can't see land. As we slide into the trough, more water rushes over the side of the boat. It is up to my knees. My feet are numb but I can tell that my shoes are heavy with water. I look up again and see a swirling wave bigger than the others rolling towards us in fury. The boat tips. This time we keep on tipping. The boat is full of water so it doesn't roll up on the wave - it rolls into it, and the wave crashes over us like we are on the shore, only we're in the middle of the sea. I hear screaming and then nothing as water rushes over my head.

Who will come to save me? Who knows where I am apart from the others tossing and bobbing in the waves like me? What would Bini do now?

I like how the writer has written how Europe is sprawled in front of them, I think it represents how Europe is so complicatedly shaped

I really liked how it makes us as readers in Europe look at our position in the world from Shif's perspective - it's extraordinary how relatively fortunate a physical accident of birthplace can make us...

I really want to know who Bini is

This book has such an amazing first chapter! It makes you want to read the whole thing! I love how the writer uses really good vocabulary, and makes so much happen in so little space. I have never read such a short but good first chapter!

I think it's an amazing opening chapter, too; I think the 'circular' structure of the book works really well - I felt like it started with the image I was more familiar with from news reports and so on and then the rest of the narrative took me back to that point, filling in some of the gaping holes I'm ashamed to say were in my knowledge of what brings people to those boats.

I know know that from reading the whole of the first chapter that there is 300 people on the boat. Also, from the perspective of Shif that I think that all of the people are tightly packed together. Too many people on a tiny boat.

I love the opening chapter!

I think my favorite character is Shif already! He seems like to be the person whose ready for adventure!

@Yatogami Shif is the only character you know about o.o

I love the opening chapter because it is not all based on the same thing .It is based on lots of different things like saving people on life boats.I also like the video because that shows what happens partway through the opening chapter and it shows how to safe people in real life .

I LOVE THE OPENING CHAPTER?

The author has described the scene extremely well, so much so it feels like you are on the boat in the ocean.

Oct 22

That's true; it does feel like you're on the ocean!

In the book, you are suddenly plunged into adventure and action, as the boat tips over in the opening! Very dramatic!!!!

Bini is Shifs friend - he loves Maths

Hi! I started reading some of Magda's Boy 87- it looks really good!

I'll need to read more.. Magda seems so know everything about this!

What an opening chapter! I finished page three wanting to know more. Then the detail about the characters in the following chapters really made me think about life and friendship.

What will happen to Shif and Bini? I am looking forward to finding out but I suspect that I may find it emotional.

Beatrice, I know that I promised to read to page 15 but I am so tempted to read on...

They're such likeable central characters, aren't they? I think that (and, of course, the fact that they're children...) makes what happens to them even more affecting...

I have read up to the second part! I really want to read on!

Well, it's such a rainy day today that I reckon you should curl up with it this evening :-)
