And The Oscar Goes To...

Good morning GCMS, I hope your second week of home learning is as productive as your first.

Welcome back to the Film Club blog, I hope you've spent your downtime indulging in the magic of cinema.

Last week Disney launched its own streaming platform, Disney+. I'm a sucker for all things streaming, we have Netflix, Amazon Prime, NowTV and now Disney+ in our collection! I couldn't help myself and signed up pretty much immediately. The content is pretty much what you'd expect, all of the Disney movies, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars plus a few other bits and pieces (I'd recommend the Mandalorian but that's a TV show and this is Film Club!).

So, to help pass the time we have been re-watching the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in chronological order. We've blazed through Captain America: The Winter Soldier; Captain America: Civil War; Thor Ragnarok; Black Panther and both Avengers Assemble and Avengers: Age of Ultron. The aim is to eventually watch Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame back to back but that will take up some serious time making it a weekend/Easter Holidays watch.

There's something special about those films. It would be easy to dismiss them as mindless action and a cash grab by Disney Marvel but I think there's so much more to them. Growing up I fell in love with Star Wars. I was shown it at an early age and was hooked instantly (I'm old enough that I saw the originals before any of the prequels and sequel-sequels were made). What drew me in was the sheer enormity of it all. This wasn't just a series of films. This was a universe, full of characters, species, planets, religions, technologies and more. The Star Wars lore is what I loved. It is why Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter are so timeless. There is substance, depth. The same can be said for MCU.

Each film builds on the last adding yet another layer of detail. Whether it is driving the overarching plot or further developing the characters, there is a rich tapestry being woven across all of these films. The pay off in the final two instalments of the Avengers story is breathtaking. I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried.

So. What are you watching? What films have graced your television this week? Comment below and send reviews to andrew.robson@gosforthcent.newcastle.sch.uk and I'll publish some of them.
